Netflix BioShock Movie Undergoes Budget Cuts: Director Promises a More Intimate Adaptation
27 Jul 2024
Netflix’s highly anticipated BioShock movie is undergoing significant changes from its original conception. The project, which has been in development for some time, is being redesigned to fit within a more modest budget, leading to a scaled-down version of what was initially envisioned.
At San Diego Comic-Con’s Producers on Producers panel, Roy Lee discussed the impact of the budget cuts on the film. He indicated that the new leadership has opted to reduce the budgets, which has resulted in a reimagined, more intimate take on the project. This new direction aims to present a more personal perspective rather than an expansive spectacle.
Despite these changes, Francis Lawrence remains at the helm as the director. The movie adaptation was first announced in 2022 and is based on the 2007 video game that takes players into the dystopian underwater city of Rapture, a world ravaged by avarice and moral decline. Initially, Michael Green, known for his work on Logan and Blade Runner 2049, was set to script the film.
In a previous interview with GamesRadar+ in November, Lawrence revealed that while the film would remain faithful to many elements of the game, there would also be new twists to keep both newcomers and longtime fans engaged. He emphasized that these new elements would respect the original game's canon, ensuring the story remains authentic. Lawrence expressed his excitement about the script and the fresh surprises it holds for the audience.
As of now, Netflix has not announced a release date for the BioShock movie. It is one of several video game adaptations currently in the pipeline, including sequels to Five Nights at Freddy’s and a Minecraft film.
